The united kingdom has had the use of sideband on 27 MHz for a number of months now and unless you’ve got a suitable CB stashed away or just never stopped using sideband, getting on air with the new mode means you’re going to need a SSB enabled CB.

Unless your willing to travel the sometimes rocky road of buying from auction sites or are lucky enough to know someone generous who has a spare set hanging around, that leaves buying a brand new CB radio.

Some retailers were on the ball with new rigs up for sale on pre-order well before sideband was introduced with others adding SSB CB’s to their range later on, maybe waiting to see what sort of demand the change prompted before splashing out on stock. Even the cost of shipping in radios and adding them to regular advertising can be a huge outlay for smaller hobby radio dealers.

Handheld SSB CB Radios

The Albrecht AE2990 SSB Handheld has been approved for use in the UK and gives the standard dual bands of 40 UK and 40 EU channels but with the addition of a sideband mode. Having the SSB option in a truly portable unit is ideal if your planning to work from some high ground where vehicles just won’t go.

With the addition of an external antenna even the standard output can be very effective at high altitude and its good to see the Albrecht has stayed away from the limiting purpose built battery with its power source being a set of easily changed AA batteries.

This is by no means a cheap purchase with it’s price being comparable to a full featured sideband mobile CB but hopefully the future will bring a few more handheld models with SSB transmit and prices will begin to fall. Of course this all depends on how popular SSB is and if the market for new sideband CB handhelds is big enough to warrant design and production costs in the first place.

Usefulness Of AM/FM CB’s ?

We’ve notice that a number of dual mode AM/FM rigs are readily available for the UK market. Most of these sets look viable enough but is the extra AM mode really worth it when there is so little AM use on 27 MHz, maybe even less now sideband is in play.

These CB’s aren’t that cheap either and surly its got to be the better option to shot straight to a SSB model with all the flexibility of an all mode radio.
